The Wacatee Zoo: Nearby Captain’s Quarters Resort

The Waccatee Zoological Farm is located just 15 minutes’ drive from central Myrtle Beach, and is six miles from the beach as the crow flies, meaning it’s close to your favorite Myrtle Beach resort, Captain’s Quarters.

First created over 20 years ago as a private collection of domestic and exotic animals, the zoo is still privately owned and receives no state or federal funding. It is located on 500 acres of privately owned woodland, and stands at the junction of the Intracoastal Waterway, the Waccamaw River and Socastee Creek. With more than 100 species of animals to be seen, the Waccatee Zoo makes an exceptional and interesting outing for the entire family.

The zoo has a viewing area of 50 wooded acres, and you’ll find that the canopy of trees hides winding trails from which you can see thousands of animals. The proximity of the Waccamaw River and its tributaries are a magnet to thousands of egrets and herons. Waccatee Zoological Farm attracts thousands of migratory birds. Also hidden beneath the shade trees are herds of zebra and buffalo, and there are several species of big cats including tiger, leopard, lion and cougar. If the kids get tired of walking, you can take them to the zoo’s shop, which sells snacks and gifts. By the way, don’t forget to introduce the kids to Chico, a chimp who has his own TV.

The physical address of the zoo is 8500 Enterprise Rd. Myrtle Beach and entrance costs $9 for adults and $4 for ages 12 and under. It is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. And since you’ll be staying at Captain’s Quarters, don’t forget to take along your VMB card, which gives you a 10% discount off both your total entrance charge and any purchases of more than $10.
