Myrtle Beach Attractions Near Captain’s Quarters: The SkyWheel

One of the main attractions on a Myrtle Beach vacation, and certainly the tallest at 187 feet, is the SkyWheel -- a giant Ferris wheel that opened on May 20, 2011. You’ll find the SkyWheel (well, you can’t really miss it !) close to Pier 14 and the focus of the oceanfront boardwalk and promenade, only a short distance away from Captain’s Quarters resort.

And be sure to take along your VMB card, which you’ll get upon check-in at the resort, in order to get a $2 discount on the cost of a ride in one of the gondolas so long as you come before 7 p.m.

The location of the SkyWheel puts it within easy reach of Captain’s Quarters and the breathtaking view you get from the highest point makes it an attraction not to be missed.

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel has 42 enclosed gondolas that were manufactured in Switzerland and are each climate controlled. Each gondola takes up to six passengers and is covered with a non-reflective glass, enabling its passengers to take spectacular photos and videos of the Strand. This is the first observation wheel of its kind in the United States and only the second in continental America. One of the gondolas is designed for VIPs and has a glass floor and leather bucket seats.

The SkyWheel is particularly appealing at night. The giant wheel is fitted with more than 1 million LED lights that are computer controlled. You can expect to see a state-of-the-art magical light show every night just after sunset and repeated several times through the evening. When you’re staying at Captains Quarters Resort make sure that SkyWheel is on your list of things to do.  The views of the Strand are out of this world, and this will definitely be a highlight of your trip to Myrtle Beach.
