Sling Shot Thrill Ride: Captain’s Quarters Nearby Attractions

If its thrills you’re looking for during your Myrtle Beach vacation at Captains Quarters, then you won’t find anything better than the Sling Shot Thrill Ride.

The Sling Shot, located at the corner of 12th Ave. N. and Ocean Boulevard-- just a short walk from Captain’s Quarters and downtown Myrtle Beach attractions, is a kind of reverse bungee jump, and can be likened to a cross between an aircraft carrier catapult launch, an ejection seat departure and a traditional bungee jump.

Here’s how it works: Two riders are strapped into a capsule, lying on their backs and facing the sky. The capsule, which is held to the ground by an electro-magnetic trigger mechanism, is attached at its sides to elastic bungee ropes that in turn are attached at their other end to two towers, which are extended to full height prior to launch. At launch the capsule with its two riders is released and propelled vertically upwards into the air with an acceleration of between 3 and 5g, similar to the acceleration experienced by carrier-borne aircraft at launch.

Imagine lying on your back strapped into a capsule and suddenly being released into the air at speeds of up to 100 mph! You will reach a height of more than 300 feet, almost as high as the Eiffel Tower. When you get to the apex of the ride, down you fall again towards the Earth, only to be rocketed upwards again as the ropes once more shoot you into the air. This thrill ride gets the adrenaline pumping through the body leaving you with a never to be forgotten kick as well as a collection of butterflies in the stomach. Each ride is filmed by a camera attached to the capsule, and a DVD of the ride is offered to participants.
