Kayaking: Things to Do Near Captain’s Quarters

This is a sport that has become more and more popular over the years, ranging from white water kayaking to more serene and unhurried tours that you can now enjoy in a leisurely manner in Myrtle Beach.

J & L Kayak Adventures is a new partner to the VMB Card, and is located in North Myrtle Beach. The company offers a good cross section of tours, the two main venues being the coastal wetlands at Cherry Grove Inlet, and the Waccamaw River. The river starts at Lake Waccamaw near Whiteville N.C. and winds its way to the ocean 140 miles downstream near Georgetown, SC.

Our kayaking partners offer a selection of tours. Their Waccamaw River tours include 2 and 3-hour scenic tours, a 4-hour birding tour and a 3-hour moonlit river tour. There is a lot more variety to the tours offered from the Cherry Grove Inlet. They include sunrise and sunset expeditions, moonlight and romantic excursions, and both fishing and crabbing tours. The estuary at Cherry Grove Beach is almost totally separated from the Intracoastal Waterway and is teeming with salt water marine life. The tours here take in some of the more remote creeks as well as an isolated island, where you can take a walk along a secluded beach or swim in the shallow lagoon.

The Waccamaw River is bordered by numerous swamp wetlands that are a perfect habitat for the many different species of wildlife you will see there. You are unlikely to catch a glimpse of any habitation during your tour, since most of the river is cut off from housing and other civilization. This gives you the impression of being deep in the wilderness. You are likely to see a wealth of wildlife on the Waccamaw. This is will include hogs, deer, beavers and otters. The bird life found here inludes owls, eagles and hawks, and numerous other species of native wildlife.
