Staff Interview: Darryl Conner, Jr.

During your vacation at Captain’s Quarters, you will meet various employees throughout the resort, like housekeepers and front office staff. One person you probably won’t meet is Darryl Conner, Jr.

Darryl, who was born and raised locally, is the Children’s Activities, Entertainment & Marketing Coordinator here at Captain’s Quarters. He is the guy who plans and coordinates the variety of activities that take place at Captain’s Quarters and helps make your Myrtle Beach vacation more enjoyable. Some of the activities he coordinates include our friendly shark Salty’s appearances and Chief Kamu’s Fire and Hula Show, which takes place on the back lawn during the summer.

We sat down with Darryl recently to talk to him more about his job and what he likes most about it.

Captain’s Quarters: When did you first start working at Captain’s Quarters?

Darryl Conner, Jr.: I started working here at Captain’s Quarters as the Children’s Activities, Entertainment & Marketing Coordinator in June of 2012.

CQ: You do a lot of behind the scenes work. What is your favorite part about planning activities and getting fun things ready for the guests?

DC: My favorite part about planning is getting to know the performers, counselors, actors, etc., prior to their performance. Many times the guests only have the opportunity to meet the stage presence of these individuals but in my line of work, I actually get to understand them outside of their “Entertainment Mysteries.”

CQ: What is the most rewarding thing about your job? The most challenging?

DC: The most rewarding part of this job is being able to talk with the guests about how they enjoyed the events hosted here at Captains Quarters. Not only are they friendly enough to share their experiences here, I also am able to meet people from all over the country who chose to vacation here with us at CQ. The most challenging is listening to the guests as they are saddened about their departure. In this line of work, you must be able to relate and enjoy the company of the guests and their children.

CQ: What activity do you think they guests enjoy the most out of all the activities that Captain’s Quarters provides?

DC: In my opinion, I believe the guests enjoy the Fire and Hula Show we offer in the summer months. Chief Kamu and his staff do a wonderful job interacting with our guests, which enhances the CQ experience. I also feel that the children enjoy our Summer Activities staff as they encounter arts and crafts, physical activities on the beach and so much more. As I begin planning for next year, I become more excited by the day!

CQ: What is your favorite memory from working here thus far?

DC: My favorite memory working here thus far has been nursing Salty back to health after having emergency surgery! He didn’t want to rest but I was the bedside police…all I had to do was bribe him with ice cream and after that I had no problems whatsoever!

CQ: What is your favorite part of Captain’s Quarters?

DC: My favorite part of Captain’s Quarters is our Level 6 Entertainment Center. I love to bowl!

CQ: Now that the season has slowed down, what exciting things are you planning for the kids and families who will be coming to Captain’s Quarters next summer?

DC: Currently, I am revising our entire Children’s Activities Program. It is my goal to offer more activities to include Kids Night Out, Luaus, Poolside Dance Parties with our mascot and double the Arts and Crafts!

CQ: What’s it like to work with Salty?

DC: Salty is great to work with when he remains on his best behavior. Sometimes I have to put him in time-out because sometimes he is too playful and won’t allow me to do my work…..many times I have to remind myself he is only 1 year old!! He turns 2 in a few days…October 26th!

CQ: What did you go to school for and what are you currently going to school for?

DC: I am currently a senior at Coastal Carolina University where I am a candidate for the

Bachelor of Arts in Middle Level Education degree. I have attended other universities and have degrees/certifications in Worship Studies & Church Music, Teaching English as A Second Language, and Childcare Management.

CQ: What do you like to do in your free time?

DC: In my free time, I love to sing! I am the Minister of Music at Bethlehem #1 Missionary Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina where I lead and teach worship principles. I am also the President of the Kingston Lake Missionary Baptist Young People’s Association where we focus on the community for a total of 37 churches.

At the end of the interview, Darryl added:
