Myrtle Beach Marathon

Myrtle Beach MarathonThe Myrtle Beach Marathon is coming up fast! It will be taking place on Feb. 15. In its 17th year the marathon will be taking on a jungle theme and will feature a variety of events and activities throughout the race weekend.

The weekend will begin on Feb. 13 with a Runner’s Expo which will also take place on Feb. 14. Then, on the 14th the Ripley’s Aquarium Family Fun Run will take place followed by the Neon Night 5K. The big event takes place on Feb. 15th with the marathon, half marathon and marathon relay starting early in the morning. That evening there will be a post-race party at the House of Blues.

One of the biggest running events of the year in the area, the Myrtle Beach Marathon is often attended by locals and visitors alike.

Because some of the funds raised through the event will go towards the Rare Species fund, some of the animals from T.I.G.E.R.S. will be on hand to meet racers throughout the weekend.

Here’s what you need to know about each of the races and events:

HTC Runner’s Expo: The Runner’s Expo will take place at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday night and 11 a.m. on Friday. There is no entry charge for this event but there is a parking fee. Here registered participants will be able to get their race bibs and shirts. There will also be plenty of vendors set up at the expo.

Neon Night 5K: A shorter race, the Neon Night 5K will take place on Friday night at 7 p.m. beginning at Broadway at the Beach near the aquarium. This 1-hour max event will include awards for finishers, overall top finishers and winners from various age groups.

Ripley’s Family Fun Run: Beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, this family event covers 1 mile. The start and finish line will be at Ripley’s Aquarium. This race will benefit Horry County Schools and students in the area are encouraged to participate.

Ripley’s Post Race Party: For the families who are racing, the Ripley’s Post Race Party will take place beginning at 6 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. at the aquarium. They will have light refreshments available. Those with race bibs can get in for free.

Dasani Half Marathon: For those who wish to run the half marathon this event will take place beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. It will begin near the intersection of Grissom Parkway and 21st Avenue North. The race will finish at the TicketReturn.com Field. There is a time limit of 4 hours on this race and racers must register online by Feb. 5 or sooner if all of the spots get filled. Overall awards and age group awards will be awarded.

WPDE Marathon Team Relay: For those who want to run the race but don’t want to run the entire way alone, the team relay is the perfect solution. Relay teams can be made up of two to five people. Spots for this part of the race have already been filled.

Myrtle Beach Marathon: The full marathon will begin the same place and time as the half marathon and will also end at the TicketReturn.com Field. All participants in this race who finish will be awarded with a Finisher’s Medal. Awards will also be presented to the overall top contenders, within various age groups and to the first finishers in the wheelchairs and crankchair categories. If you raced last year there are a couple of things you will want to be aware of for the race this year: the course time limit is now 7 hours and headphone are now permitted, although organizers would like runners to be careful if they do choose to wear them during the race.

House of Blues Post Race Party: The 21 and up after-party will take place at the House of Blues at Barefoot Landing on Saturday night. They’ll have free food and light refreshments from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Entry is free for race participants and volunteers. Others may enter for $20.
